LENDING CHARACTER VOICE OVER TO ADS.
So you have a great concept and script for your promotion but you need that funny, cool, unique, or unworldly character voice to bring it all home! You hear the voice in your head, but want to find the right voice actor to seal the deal! Hiring a voice talent for character work can be fun and adventurous! We've talked about how important it is to give the right specs to a talent, but how do you get the voiceover artist to give you the performance you need? Easy! Let them interpret and make choices! I know sounds scary right? You have a singular sound in mind, and you want that. The problem with closing off interpretation, is it can lead you down the wrong path for your project. You never know when a voice actor will bring something to the project that you might have not thought of! You'll love the project more, you're clients will love it, and the talent helped put those final touches on it. As a professional voice talent, I pride myself on being collaborative, flexible, and take excellent direction. That's what you need to find a perfect character voice.
Recently, I worked with some great clients on a casino ad. They wanted an "Italian Voice", but in my experience that can mean a lot of things. Is it a sexy Italian Stallion, a stereotypical New York accent, or the voice you hear when you see that cartoon on a pizza box? When I saw the audition, I tapped into my 10 year old self...I did my best Mario from all those years of Nintendo (see mom video games helped get me a job!).
My clients were super fun and they loved my interpretation. The final was just about the same as the audition. So much fun, and my Italian ancestors couldn't be more proud ;)
